Sony has released a new firmware update which is supposed to plu the hole that allowed for the USB JailBreaks. According to PS3-Hacks.com, it is effective.

Some time ago, I posted about the PS3 being hacked by a GeoHot (see PS3 Hacked!). Sony answered by several firmware updates targeted stopping the hacks, one of which removed the “Other OS” capability which allowed users to install Linux on their PS3s (see New PS3 Firmware to remove Linux on all PS3s).

Despite Sony’s attempts to stop any and all attempts at hacking the PS3, several hacks have surfaced.

A week after Sony “forced” the firmware which removed “Other OS” onto its users, GeoHot reported that he had restored that functionality on the new firmware. Some time after that an Australian outfit – Quantronics – started advertising and selling a PS3 Jailbreak Modchip.

It seems like, as soon as the validity of the Jailbreak Modchip was confirmed, Sony filed an injunction to stop the selling of the modchip.

Now, there is another PS3 Jailbreak source. This time, all the code is Open Source and it requires a small board that can be purchased online.

Both Jailbreak methods allow users to back up Blu-Ray games to their drives and play them from there. The suggested benefits are increased Blue-Ray drive life (since you are not using it as much) and significantly faster game load times.
