Murchison Meteorite
I found a pretty interesting article on Slashdot today talking about the fact that “[previously] unknown organic molecules have been discovered in a 100 kg meteorite that hit Australia in 1969″. The article continues saying that the meteorite (or meteorites like this) could have contributed to the complexity and make up of the organic soup that was the start of it all.
This is article is particularly interesting to me because about a week ago, a friend of mine (who you may recognize from her website in my Blogroll) and I had one of those “What if…” discussions and got on the topic of how life on Earth (or any other planet for that matter) could have started. During that discussion I proposed a situation where a small amount of organic material or, may be, even a small strain of DNA could have ended up on a planet with the correct conditions to eventually produce life.
The purpose of my argument was to illustrate a situation where, at some much later point, a human being lands on an barren Earth-like (circa 4 – 4.5 billion years ago) planet and accidentally leaves some organic material, which could eventually leads to life on that planet. However, I completely recognized the possibility that this is how life on Earth could have started.
The whole thing boils down to my belief that life did, does, or will exist somewhere else in the Universe. Of course, I can’t prove this but my suggestion (I am not even going to call it “a theory”) of how life could have started on Earth seems to somewhat align with this article. And if there is any possibility that this is how things got started here, it could have happened elsewhere.
